Capt. Robert Lemuel Miller, USNR (ret.)

It is with genuine sadness that the McLean Orchestra announces the passing of Capt. Robert “Lem” Miller, USNR (ret.), beloved father and dear friend, supporter and trustee of the McLean Orchestra. Lem passed away on April 1, 2015. Lem was born in Ft. Worth, Texas then raised in San Angelo, Texas. He attended Texas Tech University, BA Mathematics, University of Texas, MA Mathematics/Operations, and received additional MA’s in Psychology and Accounting.
Lem served in the Navy/Navy Reserve for 26 years and retired at the rank of Captain. He worked for the federal government and contractor companies in the DC metro area over a 43 year career in systems engineering. He retired while working for SAIC. Lem was an avid lover of the fine arts. As a kid he played the alto saxophone and sang bass in choirs in high school, college, and in church. He sang with the Texas All State Choir in 1954. In his adult life Lem performed in the 70′s and 80′s with the Fairfax Jubilaires and the Alexandria Harmonizers (Barbershop choirs).
His support of the fine arts and social organizations was extraordinary and had memberships in organizations including Virginia Chamber Orchestra, Phillips Collection of Washington D.C, Corcoran Gallery of Art, National Building Museum, United States Capitol Historical Society, New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, Black Tie Inc. of D.C, Saturday Dinner Dances at the Sulgrave Club, Embassy Series of Washington, D.C, Fort Myers Officer’s Club, National Society of Arts and Letters, and the Army and Navy Club of Washington D.C. Most recently Lem served on the Board of Trustees for the McLean Orchestra.
The Miller Family has requested that in lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Lem’s name, to any of the charitable organizations that he supported, such as the McLean Orchestra. For further information about the memorial service or to make a donation please call 703-893-8646.
